A 35-year-old businessman was beaten to death on Tuesday night during a misunderstanding at Unity, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and his cousin has since been arrested by the police.
Dead is Arvin Dipchand called “Krishna”, 35, of Lot 113 Dochfour, ECD. Dipchand was rushed to the Mahaicony Hospital by members of the Community Policing Group where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred around 6.30 pm at Second Street, Unity, Mahaica while Dipchand was visiting his son from a previous marriage who lives in the community.
The suspect, a 28-year-old electrician of Unity was taken into custody and is assisting the police with investigations.
This newspaper was told that the suspect and Dipchand were known to have frequent misunderstandings stemming from Dipchand accusing the suspect of stealing from him.
Reports are that on Tuesday evening, the suspect who was under the influence and armed with a hammer, approached Dipchand. He reportedly threw the hammer at Dipchand and it struck him in his head causing him to fall to the ground.
Whilst on the ground, the suspect allegedly cuffed Dipchand two times and lashed him in his head with a piece of wood. In a bid to escape, Dipchand entered his car but subsequently collapsed. He was picked up and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Dipchand was a father of one.
His body is currently at the Jerrick’s funeral home awaiting an autopsy which is scheduled for some time later this week.
