A team of 11 players and two coaches will depart Guyana on Monday to participate in the 8th annual TRI-Nation tennis tournament. The tournament will be hosted in French Guiana this year.
‘Cup of The Guyanas’ previously known as the ‘Inter Guiana Games’ is a trophy awarded to the winner of a team tennis competition hosted interchangeably by the nations of Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
The competition originally started in Suriname during October 2012 as a collaboration between the three countries. It is a developmental platform for tennis which would not stretch the available resources of the national associations and is cost-effective.
The competition accommodates U12, U14 and U18 boys and girls. The tournament is scheduled for October 29 to November 3, 2019.
Team Guyana were the defending champions going into the 2018 competition but they placed third, Suriname secured second place while French Guiana won the cup.
The Guyana Tennis Association (GTA) in a release expressed gratitude to the stakeholders who contributed towards the team’s expenses. The sponsors are: the Guyana Water Inc., Sheltez Tennis Club, Assuria General (GY) Inc., Camex Restaurant Inc., Pumas Tennis Club, Mrs. Annabelle Carter-Sharma, United Tennis Club, Mr. Amar Ally (GUYOIL-Friendship E.B.D), Mr. Derrick Gobin, Hassan Tractor Spares, Mr. Lewis Katerick, Bakewell, PAS Cargo Guyana Inc and Republic Bank.
