A body, suspected to be that of a Venezuelan man, was found with multiple stab wounds in the shallow waters of a creek at Tabatinga, during the wee hours of yesterday morning near the Brazil-Lethem border.
The body, which is yet to be identified, was found in the Tabatinga Creek by two residents who live close to the creek along with some policemen who had been summoned.
An investigation of the suspected murder is underway and police have already arrested several persons.
According to information gathered from residents who live near to where the body was found, there was an altercation around 2 am, some distance away from the Lethem Public Road heading towards Brazil.
A resident, who asked not to be named, told Sunday Stabroek that around 2 am he woke up to the sound of an argument. He said he could not understand what the speakers were saying as they were speaking in a different language.
After a few minutes the argument subsided and he started hearing noises, which he assumed came from a scuffle. A short while later, he said, he started hearing “dragging noises,” which made him suspicious and he decided to go outside to see what was going on.
“After I go outside, I see two Venezuelan guys dragging something and then throw it into the creek,” he said. When he saw that, he said, he immediately assumed something “fishy” was going on because since living in that area, he never known anybody to throw garbage in the creek at that hour.
He immediately called the police and told them of his suspicions.
After the police arrived at his home, he said he went with them to investigate what was thrown into the river and upon close inspection they found a dead body of a man, who appeared to be in his twenties. He said the man was stabbed once to the neck and multiple times about his lower body.
Upon further investigations during the morning, he said, they noticed a trail of blood leading from where the murder occurred to the creek where the body was dumped. “So it look like they drag him from all the way where they killed him to the creek,” he added.
When contacted by this newspaper, Region Nine Commander Keithon King said that he could not have disclosed details of the investigation at this stage but confirmed that they indeed found a dead body in the Tabatinga Creek and investigations are currently ongoing. He said several persons who are suspected to be involved in the crime were taken into police custody to assist with the investigation.
The body, which is at the Lethem Mortuary of the Lethem Regional Hospital remained unidentified up to last evening.
