Mahindranauth Tiwari outplayed a field of 60 golfers on Saturday to emerge Net champion with a score of 65 while Patrick Prashad reigned supreme in the top flight in the 14th edition of the MACORP golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC).
Keen competition in the ‘A’ Flight was evidenced with three veterans equaling for the top spot with former Guyana Open champion and Canadian Club “Golfer of the year 2018”, Suknanan Jaipaul, coming an impressive fourth with one stroke behind.
The tie was resolved on their back nine performances and resulted in Prashad, former Captain and easily LGC’s most consistent golfer of the year, edging out his rivals. Prashad return scores of 67/9 and forced Kassim Khan (67/8) and Mike Mangal (67/8) to finish second and third respectively. The champion credited his good putting with making the difference.
Meanwhile, the large 10-18 handicap ‘B’ Flight was also marked with fascinating competitiveness. Barring the winner of the Flight, nine golfers shared only a four-point difference.
After ‘back nine’ tie-breaker analyses, Tiwari (65/14) emerged champion and was trailed by Deoram Dinanauth (68/16) and Ian Gouveia (68/16) in that order.
Tiwari explained, “My drives and putting today were excellent. My chipping could have been better but I enjoyed a good day’s performance.”
In the 20-36 ‘C’ Flight, the top five Net places indicate there was good play there too. A tie between Lloyd Fung-A-Fat (68/26) and Jordi Pinol (68/28) was resolved in Lloyd’s favour with Paton George (70/20) taking third.
In the female division, Guyana Open runner-up Shanella London (74/15) secured the championship and was followed by Dr Joaan Deo (77/15) and Eureka Giddings (95/28).
Tournament champion was Tiwari with his overall Best Net score of 65. The Best Gross (75) and the Longest Drive prizes were won by Avinda Kishore, while the Nearest The Pin prize was won by Videsh Persaud, who went on to score a birdie at that hole.
Chief Executive Officer of MACORP, Guillermo Escarraga, who played in the tournament but did not allow his scores to be entered, expressed his appreciation to the golfers as well as to MACORP’s customers who had come to spectate at the tournament at the company’s invitation. He was grateful that this 14th year of support to the LGC had seen the largest turnout of golfers so far for the company’s annual tournaments.
