The Bishops’ High defeated Cummings Lodge 2-0 yesterday in the GuyOil/Tradewind Tankers Secondary School Football League at the Ministry of Education ground.
Natayah Smith and Malachi Richards scored for the Carmichael Street unit in the 30th and 53rd minute to clinch the vital three points in the 60 minute affair.
The Bishops’ High was handed the perfect opportunity to break the deadlock after being awarded a penalty kick following an infraction inside the area on the stroke of halftime.
Tasked with the responsibility from the distance was goalkeeper Smith, who placed his effort past his opposing number to give his side the deserved lead.
However Smith would turn from hero to villain in the space of seven minutes as he was issued a red card for a clumsy challenge inside the box.
The resulting error gifted the East Coast of Demerara unit a penalty kick. However the resulting spot-kick was denied by the substitute custodian as Bishops High maintained their slim lead.
The contest was then sealed seven minutes before the end as Richards scored. It was a brilliantly worked goal, as a passing combination was finished off into the far corner by Richards from inside the 18 yard box.
The tournament continues today at the same venue with another doubleheader.
