During his arraignment at a city court yesterday, Shamal Plass admitted to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
His sentencing was deferred pending a probation report.
Plass pleaded guilty with explanation to two charges which stated that on November 3rd, at Georgetown, he illegally had in his possession a .38 revolver and three live rounds of matching ammunition. The charges were read by Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
In his explanation, Plass told the magistrate that he was out shopping for baby-related articles for his daughter when someone named Fordyce approached him and asked him to hold a bag. He said he later discovered that the bag contained a firearm.
According to information presented by Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell, acting on information received, ranks went to the location mentioned to conduct a search. They found Plass sitting on a bench at the side of the road and approached him. The police officers found the firearm loaded with the three rounds of ammunition concealed in his pants after Plass gave them consent to search him. Plass was subsequently asked if he owned a firearm licence, to which he responded “no.” He was told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested.
After listening to both sides of the story, Magistrate McGusty summoned a probation officer and told her to speak with Plass. She subsequently deferred sentencing until November 21st, when the probation officer is expected to give her report.
