Chris Pollard, an 18-year-old who has several pending charges in two courts in relation to thievery, was on Thursday ordered to serve a one-year sentence after being found guilty of snatching a man’s phone.
The charge against Pollard, of Lot 83 David Street, Kitty, stated that on September 13th, at Camp Street Georgetown, he stole a cellphone, valued $45,000, from Sachin Narine.
At the conclusion of his trial yesterday, Magistrate Annette Singh sentenced Pollard to one year in jail.
During Pollard’s arraignment, Prosecutor Quinn Harris had said that he is known to the court as he has several pending simple larceny charges in the city courts, and at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Harris related that on the day in question, around 5.30 pm, Narine was walking on Camp Street, heading in a southern direction. He added that he was on his phone at the time and felt his phone being snatched from his hands. Narine saw Pollard, accompanied by two others, and in an attempt to retrieve his phone he approached the defendant. It was reported that Pollard threatened to hit him if he got closer and this made Narine raise an alarm. Police in the area were alerted but did not catch up to Pollard after he ran off with the cell phone. However, Pollard was eventually found and arrested.
