Donne Dojoy, the Guyanese woman who was fatally stabbed in Queens, New York last Friday was previously assaulted by her estranged husband Dineshwar Budhidat in August and had an order of protection out against him.

According to a New York Daily News report, the order was issued in a court case where Budhidat was accused of slapping and choking Dojoy on August 21 at their apartment on Albert Road near Whitelaw St. in Ozone Park.

Sources with knowledge of the case told the New York Daily News that Budhidat had pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and was scheduled to be sentenced in January.

The court order, the report noted, remained in place up to the point she was killed. Budhidat’s body was later found hanging from a tree.

Dojoy, called ‘Rehanna,’ 25, who worked at a bar in Liberty Avenue, New York, is believed to have been killed by Budhidat, 33, who was described as jealous of her apparent infatuation with Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan.

The New York Daily News reported that Dojoy died on Friday night after visiting Budhidat’s place, despite his history of attacking her and the court order which was meant to keep them apart.

The couple, who tied the knot in July, had been separated. Dojoy had moved to a house in South Ozone Park.

Budhidat texted a cousin to say he had killed Dojoy and was going to kill himself.

The cousin called 911 and soon the police found Dojoy dead with multiple stab wounds.

Budhidat’s body was later found hanging from a tree in Brooklyn’s Spring Creek Park, about a mile and a half away from the scene.

“Another chance”

Fannita Barakat, the dead woman’s sister told the New York Daily News that Budhidat had promised Dojoy that he would change.

“Maybe she saw the best in him….he promised her he’d change,” Barakat recounted to the New York Daily News.

“I guess she wanted to give him another chance,” she added.

The report noted that Barakat remembers Dojoy as “great, hardworking and funny, and just very generous and loving.”

“I guess in the end, he was heartless for her,” Barakat told New York Daily News.

“Tears can’t stop pouring for you baby girl, you didn’t deserve this,” Wanda Garib, a co-worker at the Gemini Ultra Lounge in Queens, wrote on Facebook early Saturday, the New York Daily News said.

“I knew you since you first came to this country, we once lived under the same roof and we share many laughters (and) memories together,” Garib wrote. “Not only were u my coworker but u were also a friend.”

“She’s full of positive vibes. She always had a loving, nurturing personality,” Anthony Dojoy, a cousin of the dead woman, who visited a makeshift shrine outside the Gemini Ultra Lounge, said, the New York Daily News added.

“It has to be jealousy,” the cousin stated. “Because there’s nothing else—she’s sincere, genuine, honest.”

The report further stated that Dojoy’s neighbours were stunned to learn of her death.

“In a neighbourhood that is quiet and safe that is really painful to see this happen,” Giuseppe Buccellato, a neighbour told the New York Daily News.
