A larceny accused, who is already serving a four-month sentence for stealing a phone, on Friday tried to negotiate for a similar sentence if he admitted to a similar crime.
“I am willing to change my plea to guilty if I will get sentenced to four months… I am already serving four months for snatching a phone so another four months will be good for me,” said Faizal Mohammed, 27, when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly on Friday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
However, his bid was immediately denied. The magistrate told him she would sentence him to more than four months if he changed his plea.
As a result, Mohammed decided not to change his plea to guilty. “Well I am not going to change my plea,” he told the magistrate.
Two weeks ago, Mohammed appeared in a city court on two charges.
It was alleged that on October 11th, 2019, at Regent Street, Georgetown, he stole one phone valued $67,000 and $60,000 cash, which were the property of Dindiall Abrahim. A second charge stated that on September 18th, 2019, at the same location, he stole a cellular phone, valued $250,000, from Davenand Rampal.
The unrepresented man had denied the first charge but admit to the second charge, for which he was sentenced to four months in jail.
With his decision to not change his plea in relation to the other charge, Magistrate Daly adjourned the matter until November 25th.
