A shopkeeper and a labourer were both charged last Friday with possession of ecstasy pills for the purpose of trafficking.
Kurt Singh, a 31-year-old shopkeeper of Alberttown, and Kenton Haynes, 42, a labourer of Mocha, were separately charged with possession of an illicit drug for the purpose of trafficking.
The charges were read by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
It is alleged that on November 7th, 2019, at Albert Street, Georgetown, Singh had 181 ecstasy pills, an amphetamine drug, in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Haynes, meanwhile, was charged with having 180 ecstasy pills on the same date and at a location close to that of Singh’s location.
Each man denied the charge against him.
Singh was represented by attorney George Thomas, who in an application for bail told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner for his family. He said he was positive that his client would attend court if he were released on bail and would comply with any conditions attached to said bail.
Police say both men were arrested after ranks received certain information and undertook two separate operations in Alberttown. During the operations, Singh and Haynes were found at different locations with the stated amounts of amphetamine drugs.
The court prosecutor did not object to Singh being released on bail, but requested for conditions to be attached.
Singh was released on $100,000 bail with the condition that he lodge his passport at the court and reports to the Narcotics Branch at the Criminal Investigation Department every Monday until the determination of his trial.
The prosecutor informed the court that Haynes was arrested for similar charges last year after he was found with 559 ecstasy pills. The court heard that Haynes is currently on trial in a city court for that charge.
As a result, Haynes was remanded to prison by the magistrate.
Both men were instructed to make their next court appearance on December 13th.
