A taxi driver of Ruby, East Bank Essequibo was yesterday morning shot in his head during a robbery on Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown.
Police yesterday said that the driver, Brandon Lam, 21, of Ruby, East Bank, Essequibo is currently hospitalized at the Georgetown Public Hospital. His condition is regarded as stable.
The police say that Lam along with two others: Travis Moore of New Road, Vreed en Hoop , West Coast Demerara and Timothy Morrison, a Police Constable were attacked at around 4.30 yesterday morning.
Enquiries revealed that the trio along with another individual, Ajay Mahadeo of Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara were at a nightspot on Leopold Street. The men were in car, PVV 3948, which was driven by Constable Morrison when two men armed with a hand gun approached them.
Upon approaching, the suspects discharged several rounds and then assaulted and relieved Moore, Lam and Morrison of their valuables. Police said the men took a cell phone, a wrist watch and a gold-coloured band and $5000 from Moore while Lam was robbed of his cellular phone and $30,000 cash and Morrison, his a cell phone and $7,500.
Mahadeo managed to evade the bandits by running away, police said.
During the firing of shots, Lam was struck in the head by a bullet while Moore sustained minor injuries. He was treated and sent away.
The left side front window of the motorcar was damaged and police said a .32 spent shell was found at the scene.
Additionally, police said a stray bullet struck another motor car that was driven by Jerald Chung, a taxi driver of Sophia. The taxi driver told police that he heard several explosions, which he suspected to be gunshots. He also said that a bullet struck his vehicle.
At the time, the taxi driver was proceeding east along Leopold Street.
Police said efforts are being made to locate Mahadeo for his recount of events and a hunt is on for the suspects.
