Guyana’s most exciting super flyweight pugilist, Elton Dharry is in confident mood ahead of the biggest fight of his career to date.
The Queens, New York-based prize fighter has traveled to Melbourne, Australia to take on Australian Andrew ‘The Monster’ Moloney on Friday for the interim World Boxing Association (WBA) Super Flyweight title.
It is Dharry’s toughest test to date but one the likeable 33-year-old is ready to grasp with both hands.
“I’m a few days away from the biggest fight of my career here in Australia, a fight that I have been waiting for even though I wasn’t expecting this” Dharry told Stabroek Sport yesterday.
“I accepted this fight on the first offer I got and I’m more than confident I can bring the title back to Guyana.
I have been working hard for many years, I came a long way to this point and a lot of people did not believe that I would have gotten here but determination and my self belief got me here along with the support from my people.”
Dharry noted that he will do all in his power to come out victorious.
“I am very thankful and I am just happy to say that I will represent my country, Guyana at the highest stage of this sport, and I will give 100% to represent and win. November 15 I will do everything in my power to be the new champion.”
The fight will take place at Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne, Australia.
Moloney, an undefeated fighter, boasts a record of 20 wins (13 KOs) as against Dharry’s 24 wins (14 KOs), five losses and one draw.
It is noteworthy that Dharry’s five losses occurred in the very early part of his career and he has not lost a fight since 2010; he has won his last 21 consecutive fights. According the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), locals would be able to view the fight Down Under via the ESPN Plus app. Melbourne, Australia is 15 hours ahead of the local time.
