Naresh Samaroo was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court for the attempted murder of dog food vendor Shane Cooper, who was shot twice during a robbery last year.
The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the charge was conducted by Principal Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Two.
It is alleged that Samaroo, 22, of 97 James Street, Albouystown, on September 24th, 2018, at Stevedore Street, North Ruimveldt, caused grievous bodily harm to Cooper, with intent to murder him.
After the conclusion of the PI yesterday, the magistrate ruled that there was sufficient evidence for Samaroo to stand trial at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
During Samaroo’s arraignment, the police said that on the day in question, at about 9.15 pm, the complainant was working when three men walked up to him and demanded that he hand over his jewellery. The prosecutor noted that the defendant, in a bid to escape the men, ran and was subsequently shot in his legs and back. He was later admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The court heard that Samaroo, who was placed on an identification parade after his arrest, was positively identified by the complainant as one of the men who tried to rob him.
