Uitvlugt, Eagles battle to 1-1 draw

Fierce rivals Uitvlugt and Eagles battled to a 1-1 draw in a bruising affair when the West Demerara Football Association [WDFA] Senior League resumed on Monday at the Uitvlugt ground.

Eagles took the lead in the clash which featured several crunching tackles in the 15th minute through Adrian Adolph. Awarded a penalty kick following a hand-ball infraction, Adolph made no mistake from distance, firing his effort past the goalkeeper into the right corner.

However, Shamol Smith would equalise for the home side, earning a share of the spoils with a 39th minute conversion.

It was a fortuitous conversion for the home side, as the cross into the box from a free-kick was missed by the advancing goalkeeper, allowing an opposing player to play the ball into the path of the onrushing Smith, who simply slotted home unchallenged.

Meanwhile, Western Pumas mauled Hurry ATE 4-1. Darrel Alexis commenced the rout with an 11th minute conversion. This was quickly followed by a Kelvin Kujal effort in the 17th minute to make it 2-0.

Hurry ATE reduced the deficit in the 30th minute through Nashua Lavin to enter the halftime interval trailing 2-1. However, two unanswered goals in the second stanza completed the lopsided result.

Akeem Hopkinson etched his name on the scorer’s sheet in the 50th minute to restore his side’s two-goal cushion, before Stephon Coleman sealed the eventual scoreline with a 62nd strike.

Presently, Pouderoyen lead the league after four games with a perfect 12 points, while Crane sit in second place on nine points. In third is Uitvlugt with seven points while Western Pumas complete the top four on six points.

On the other hand, Eagles sit in fifth position on five points while Golden Warriors occupy the sixth place on four points. The seventh position is occupied by Wales [three points] due to a superior goal differential over Beavers who are also on three points.

Bringing up the rear and yet to come off the mark is Hurry ATE. The tournament continues on Saturday at the Goed Fortuin ground with a doubleheader.

The opening match will be a top-of-the-table clash when Pouderoyen battle Crane. In the second match, Golden Warriors will tackle Beavers. On Sunday at the Uitvlugt ground, Eagles will lock horns with Wales, while the second match will pit Uitvlugt against Hurry ATE.
