A truck driver who reported to the police that he lost the money he was entrusted with by a businesswoman to buy food items was charged with simple larceny yesterday and granted bail.
Leon Greene, 29, pleaded not guilty to a charge which stated that on November 6th at Pappy Show Landing, Mazaruni, he stole $330,000 from Shelly Perreira.
The charge was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
According to attorney Ronald Daniels, Perreira entrusted the money to Greene, who is a truck driver, to buy food items from Georgetown. Greene had wrapped the money in a plastic bag and placed it in his pants pocket. He soon realised he had lost the money and contacted Perreira. Daniels said that, Greene took full responsibility for the loss and reported the matter to the police, who instituted a simple larceny charge against him.
Daniels said that his client has no problem repaying the woman but he would need at least two months to do so. He added that Greene gave the woman $50,000 yesterday morning as the first part of the payment.
Perreira, however, asked that she be paid at least half the money before the matter can be dismissed.
Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail but asked that conditions be attached.
The Chief Magistrate granted bail in the sum of $70,000. She told Greene he will indicate to the magistrate at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court whether or not he has half the money for Perreira on November 21st, 2019.
