A man who pleaded guilty to “taking” money from a woman’s purse but denied stealing it was yesterday jailed.
Kevin Christopher, 24, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts and admitted to stealing $10,000, from a woman’s purse. The charge against him stated that on November 14th, at Lot 9 Houston Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, he stole $10,000 in cash from a woman. According to the police, the woman had secured her money in her purse and left to go by her daughter. Upon returning, she saw Christopher with her bag, which contained the money. It was reported that when she asked him where he got the purse from, he would not say. She reported the matter and after further investigation, Christopher was arrested. Christopher told the court that he went to pick up his clothes from the address, which is also his home and that he saw the money there, so he took it. “I do not steal, I does work hard for me thing,” he added.
Afterward, Magistrate Dylon Bess, before whom Christopher has appeared for several other matters, sentenced him to six months in jail.
