A construction worker, who asked a city magistrate for community service after admitting to stealing toilet bowl and receiver sets, has been ordered to serving nine months in jail for the crime.
Leonard Shaw, 30, of Lot 109 Princes Street, stood before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday and admitted to the charge that between November 12th and November 13th, at Lot 79 Charlotte and Alexander streets, he broke and entered the home of a woman and stole a toilet bowl set, as well as a receiver sink set, valued $42,000.
“They get back the sets, and the sink was already broken” were Shaw’s first words to the court after the charge was read to him. He then explained that he did not break into the home but added that he did take the items. He said the sink was broken and also that the items were returned.
Shaw, a construction worker, when asked why he took the items, said “I had no money” and suggested to the court that he was going to sell the items. He then proceeded to ask the Magistrate to order him to community service rather than jail time for the crime.
However, after being informed that only the toilet set was returned, the Magistrate explained that for the crime committed, he would have to serve time. He then sentenced Shaw to nine months behind bars.
