Thirty-five employees of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) who didn’t have a chance to complete high school are being given the opportunity to grapple with core subjects and to write CSEC exams.
In a press release on Saturday, GWI said it has organised a Cross–Curri-cular Creativity Training Programme for the employees. The opening ceremony of the training programme got underway on Thursday in the boardroom of GWI’s headquarters. The programme is being facilitated by the Chase Academy.
The employees will have a chance to learn core subjects such as Mathe-matics, English, Social Studies and other Carib-bean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subjects, as well as write the exams.
Managing Director of GWI, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles urged the employees to take advantage of the opportunity presented to them. The Managing Director added that it is the company’s responsibility to elevate staff from the level at which they entered the workforce, adding that if the company doesn’t do so, then it has failed its human resources.
Executive Director of Human Resources Management and Develop-ment, Elvis Jordan said that management had taken note of this particular need and therefore made the necessary arrangements to address it.
GWI said that the programme will run for one year with classes scheduled for four days a week. Upon completion they are expected to write the CSEC examinations. The 35 participants include craftsmen, sewer maintenance works, pump operators and labourers, the release said.
