Brian Mohan, who was recently committed to stand trial in the High Court for the 2015 murder of Festival City resident Christopher Wharton, was yesterday jailed for two years in a related matter after he was found guilty of illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.
The trial on those charges was conducted by senior Magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Two. The charges against Mohan stated that he was in possession of a .32 Taurus pistol as well as 10 live matching rounds without being the holder of a firearm licence on March 3rd, at North Ruimveldt.
Following the conclusion of the trial, at yesterday’s hearing the magistrate ruled that the court found Mohan guilty of the two offences and imposed a two-year sentence for each charge. However, the charges will run concurrently so Mohan, who is currently on remand for the murder of Wharton, will serve two years in jail.
Mohan, also known as ‘Abdool,’ was committed in August upon the conclusion of a preliminary inquiry into the murder charge, to stand trial in the High Court after Daly ruled that a prima facie case was made out against him.
Wharton was shot dead execution-style while sitting on the stairs of his home in November of 2015. According to the charge, Mohan murdered Wharton, also known as ‘Taps,’ on November 18th, 2015.
On November 23rd, 2015, Rickford Jones of Lot 3093 North Ruimveldt, was also charged with Wharton’s murder.
It was previously reported that Wharton was shot-execution style on the stairs of his North Ruimveldt home in what police believed to be a drug-related crime.
The murder, which was captured on CCTV cameras, was carried out by two men who rode up to the house on bicycles. Wharton, who was shot three times about the body, including once to the abdomen, succumbed within an hour of being taken to the hospital. His five-year-old son, who was seen exiting the house and running down the stairs seconds after his father was shot, sustained a gunshot wound to his foot.
