Police are still awaiting legal advice on the fatal accident which claimed the life of Bonita Sugrim, a mother of four.
Commander of Region Four (b) (Eccles-Moblissa), Senior Super-intendent Kurleigh Simon, told Stabroek News that they are awaiting advice before moving forward with the case. He disclosed that the file is still with their legal adviser.
Days after the accident, the driver had appeared before the court, was charged with several traffic offences and granted bail.
Sugrim, 24, of 69 Houston and Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was struck down by a car while she was walking along the road on October 5.
She was picked up from the parapet by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
A cousin, Jordana Sullivan, told this newspaper that persons on the scene related to the family what transpired.
“One of my friend was on the road and saw the driver speeding. She said she had to come in the corner because of the speed the car was going with. This car man had already hit down my cousin and drove away when my friends saw him speeding,” she related.
She noted that the car toppled and came to a stop approximately 500 feet away from where it struck Sugrim.
Stabroek News learnt that the car had struck another vehicle and lost control resulting in it turning over.
The family said that they would like to see justice served since they have learnt from the police that the driver had a high level of alcohol in his system at the time of the accident. They noted too that persons from Friendship village had related that this is not the first time his driving has claimed the life of a person.
