Shamal Plass, who admitted to the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition two weeks ago, was yesterday told he would be spending the next two years in jail.
At his arraignment, Plass had pleaded “guilty with explanation” to two charges—illegal possession of a .38 revolver and illegal possession of three live rounds of matching ammunition, on November 3rd, at Georgetown.
He told the magistrate that he was out shopping for baby items for his daughter when someone named Fordyce approached him and asked him to hold a bag. He said he later discovered that the bag contained a firearm.
On that occasion, Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty ordered a probation report and deferred sentencing until yesterday’s date.
During yesterday’s hearing, the probation officer read the report and the magistrate subsequently sentenced Plass to two years in prison for each of the charges. The sentences are expected to run concurrently so Plass is expected to serve only two years in jail in total.
According to information presented by Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell, acting on information received, ranks went to the location mentioned to conduct a search. They found Plass sitting on a bench at the side of the road and approached him. The police officers found the firearm loaded with the three rounds of ammunition concealed in his pants after Plass gave them consent to search him. Plass was subsequently asked if he owned a firearm licence, to which he responded “no.” He was told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested.
