Fisherman dies by suicide in Blairmont lockups

A West Berbice fisherman who was detained for threatening language and unruly behaviour last evening committed suicide in his cell at the Blairmont Police Station lockups.

Police last night said that the deceased, forty-nine-year-old Chandatt Yodha of Lot 18 Bennet Dam, D’ Edward Village was discovered lifeless around 6. 10 pm by ranks at the station.

Yodha was detained earlier in the day after he allegedly mistreated his reputed wife Angella Roy. He was expected to make a court appearance today.

Police investigations revealed that the fisherman used his underwear to commit the act. He was the only person in his cell at the time.

The body is presently at the Bailey’s Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination. The case is the latest in a series of suicides at police stations and lockups.
