Dear Editor,
The recent article on GuySuCo’s intention to address the white sugar market is encouraging. However, it doesn’t change the turnaround requirements for a successful industry. It may even make the improvement needs more critical. Excellent process control and good predictive & preventative maintenance practices will continue to be essential. This has been absent in the industry for quite some time and the absence of product consistency will be easily detected in the white sugar product.
The expected margin gains will be contracted as competition increases in this space, thus requiring similar solutions to those needed today for the current product offering of brown sugar. The industry must show that they can significantly improve current operations while beta testing their white sugar ambitions to ensure a successful launch and market debut. It would also be to the benefit of GuySuCo to expand its target market beyond its current scope while converting an available facility to accelerate the white sugar product launch timeline. Current producers with the ability to increase capacity will also target this opportunity and must be kept in mind as commercialization discussions commence with potential customers.
Yours faithfully,
Jamil Changlee
