Although he admitted to stabbing his drinking partner, a fish vendor was released on bail by a city court yesterday after he claimed that the victim was willing to drop the complaint once he is compensated.
Davindra Kumar is due to return before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan today to compensate the victim, Terrence Forde, whom he said requested $300,000 as compensation.
Failure to compensate the victim will result in Kumar being sentenced.
The charge against him states that on November 11th, 2019, at Regent Street, Kumar unlawfully and maliciously wounded Forde with intent to maim, disfigure or cause grievous bodily harm.
According to the prosecutor, the two men, who work together at Bourda Market, had a disagreement that resulted in Kumar stabbing Forde.
After the charge was read by the Chief Magistrate in Georgetown, Kumar admitted to the offence and said that he and Forde were drinking at a rum shop when Forde began insulting his wife. According to Kumar, Forde continued to provoke him and eventually pushed him, which made him angry so he armed himself with a knife and stabbed him. He added that he spoke to the relatives of Forde, who agreed to drop the criminal complaint if he pays them $300,000. Further, Kumar said, his employer is willing to lend him the money.
However, neither Forde nor his relatives was in court so the magistrate told the investigating rank to ensure that Forde attends court today.
