Alfred Taylor, a 23-year-old mason who robbed two minibus passengers of a total of just over $130,000 in valuables, has been ordered to serve a six-month sentence after he admitted his guilt.
It was alleged that Taylor robbed Keith James of a $97,000 cellphone, a $3,000 silver band and $6,000 cash, and that he robbed Akash Persaud of a $27,000 cellphone, on June 27th at the Stabroek Market Square.
Taylor had denied the allegations and his trial was scheduled to begin yesterday. However, after he was brought before Georgetown Magistrate Dylon Bess, he opted to change his plea. He was subsequently sentenced to six months in jail.
During his arraignment, the police prosecutor told the court that Taylor had been charged in 2015, but not for similar offences. He also explained that the articles had been returned, given that Taylor was caught immediately after he committed the crime.
According to the prosecutor’s information, on the day in question, Taylor and the victims were in a Route 47 minibus when he hit both of the victims to get their attention before he demanded that they hand over the valuables. Once he collected them, he exited the bus and attempted to calmly walk away from the bus park. But an alarm was raised and Taylor was apprehended.
