A Corentyne labourer was sentenced to 17 years in jail at the High Court in Berbice after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter in October. Lincoln Odell also known as ‘Shadow’, 31, had faced a charge that on June 2, 2017, at Springlands, Corentyne, he murdered Fitzherbert Grimes during the course or furtherance of a robbery. Grimes, 88, was beaten to death after he reportedly refused to hand over his pension to Odell in 2017. In October, Odell appeared at the High Court in Berbice before Justice Brassington Reynolds and pleaded guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
Yesterday, a probation report was presented after which Odell was sentenced to 17 years in prison. It was reported that on the day in question, moments after Odell visited Grimes, as he would frequently do, residents heard the pensioner screaming for help. It was alleged that Odell ordered Grimes to hand over his pension to him but after Grimes refused, he started to beat and choke the elderly man.
Neighbours had also reported that Odell was covered in blood after leaving Grimes’ house.
