The Ministry of Education has launched an investigation after a video showing two students from a city school fighting surfaced on social media.
The video, which made its way around various social media sites and became a trending topic, showed a female student of the city school being hit, kicked and dragged by a male student. The ministry, in an official statement, said that investigations into the incident and other similar matters have been launched and at the end of the inquiries, a detailed statement will be issued.
At an event yesterday, when reporters asked Minister of Education Nicolette Henry about the incident, she responded that “students usually fight.” The Minister’s comment drew outrage on social media sites.
The minister noted that in these instances, the Welfare Department would have to intervene following the Standard Operating Procedures.
Henry told reporters that the Welfare Department would have already started the process. “If need be, for there to be any feedback to you (reporters) and to the public based on the fight, I’m certain my officers would be more than happy to provide that feedback,” the minister said.
It is not known what prompted the fight between the two students.
Recently, the news media has reported on several incidents of bullying at both primary and secondary schools across the country.
