Rajen Dindial, the 34-year-old who was found guilty of killing a man in 2017 at a Grove wedding house, was yesterday sentenced to 15 years in prison for the crime.
The charge against Dindial stated that on September 3rd, 2017, he murdered Alston Henry at Grove, East Bank Demerara. However, Dindial, who was on trial before Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the High Court in Georgetown, was found guilty of the offence of manslaughter by a 12-member jury just two weeks ago.
The state’s case, which was put forward by prosecutor Sarah Martin, was that Dindial used a paddle to fatally beat Henry.
Attorney Nigel Hughes, who represented Dindial, told the court prior to the sentence being imposed that his client is an upstanding member of the community and a good employee who was caught by a moment of poor judgement.
Justice Barlow imposed the 15-year sentence, having considered the fact that after committing the act he did not render assistance. She noted that it was a callous disregard for life, the circumstances were aggravating and that she needed to impose a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to would-be offenders as violence is an ever increasing issue in society.
However the judge deducted the time the convict would have spent on remand, which was two years, two months and thirteen days. Another year was taken off the sentence for Dindial’s unblemished criminal record prior to the offence.
