Just over a week after his co-accused was freed, Dereck Bailey, one of two men separately charged with causing the death of four-year-old Ambeka Providence in a collision at Sheriff Street in 2016, was freed of the charge yesterday after a city magistrate dismissed it due to insufficient evidence.Bailey, of Lot 14 Sisters Village, West Bank Demerara and Heeranand Boodhram, of Lot 336 Sachi Bazaar, Prashad Nagar, were charged separately for the offence.
It was alleged that on September 10, at Sheriff and Garnett streets, Bailey, who drove motor car PMM 1426, and Boodhram, who drove pickup truck GPP 3500, motored in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Providence.
Bailey was on trial before magistrate Leron Daly in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court two. Daly dismissed the matter, citing insufficient evidence yesterday. Boodhram was freed of the charge earlier this month after Daly
dismissed it on a similar basis.
It is the prosecutor’s case that on the day in question, at 10.20pm, Bailey was parked in the parking lot of the Royal Castle outlet on Sheriff Street, while Boodhram, who was in his pickup, was proceeding north and approaching Garnett Street. It is alleged that the traffic light was showing green when Bailey drove out of the parking lot, heading east to west on the road, as Boodhram was crossing the junction. The vehicles collided at the intersection and as a result of the accident, Providence, who was sitting in Bailey’s car, died.
