Samuel Allen, the youth accused of killing a Brazilian miner during a robbery at Arakaka, Region One five years ago, was yesterday found not guilty of the crime by a jury.
The charge against Allen, 23, stated that on April 2nd, 2014, at Five Miles Arakaka, he murdered Joao De Souza during the course or furtherance of a robbery.
Allen was 18 at the time.
Following two hours of deliberations, a 12-member mixed jury found the man not guilty of the offence. Justice Jo-Ann Barlow, who was the trial judge, told Allen that he should see the verdict as a blessing and an opportunity and he should not follow bad company.
The judge encouraged Allen to turn over a new leaf, seeing that he has been imprisoned since he was 18-years-old.
The state’s case was presented by prosecutor Sarah Martin, while Allen was represented by attorney Maxwell McKay.
According to previous reports, De Souza was walking along a passageway heading back to his mining camp when Allen allegedly followed the miner with the intention of robbing him and dealt him a blow to the head with a hammer.
