Cordel David, one of two men charged with trafficking cannabis, was yesterday ordered to serve a three-year sentence and pay a fine after he was found guilty of the crime, while his co-accused was freed.

David, 29, of 1176 G Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice and Jason Carmichael, 36, of 138 Lamaha Park, Georgetown, were on trial before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts 8 & 9.  David and Carmichael were jointly charged with having possession of 245 grammes of cannabis for trafficking on June 26th, at 138 Lamaha Park.

At the conclusion of their trial, the magistrate ruled that based on the evidence provided by the prosecution, the court found David guilty of the offence, while there was insufficient evidence to prove that Carmichael had control, possession and knowledge of the drug. David was subsequently sentenced to three years in jail and ordered to pay $367,000 fine, while Carmichael heard that the charge against him was dismissed.  Police had said lawmen went to the Lamaha Park address and conducted a search, which uncovered the cannabis in a plastic bag on the kitchen table. Carmichael and David were subsequently arrested. A woman and a child were also present when the discovery was made.
