A police investigation has been launched into the death of a gold miner whose lifeless body was discovered in an old mining pit at Macurie Backdam, Mazaruni River on Saturday.
The identity of the dead man, who goes by the alias ‘Peasie’ remains unknown. The incident occurred sometime between 3 am and 6 am Saturday.
Stabroek News understands that ‘Peasie’ was employed to work on a four-inch land dredge at Macurie Backdam by a Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara gold miner.
Reports are that a colleague of ‘Peasie” woke up on Saturday morning and noticed that the hammock in which he sleeps was empty. However, the man did not immediately sense anything amiss and went back to sleep.
It was not until he woke up again hours after and still did not see ‘Peasie” that he raised an alarm.
He and other colleagues began to search the surrounding area for ‘Peasie’, whose lifeless body was found in an old mining pit.
The police were alerted and an investigation is ongoing.
