A teenager accused of fatally stabbing his co-worker during a scuffle over raw gold was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged for the murder.
The charge against Nelson Cambridge stated that between November 29th and 30th at George Creek, Region Eight, he murdered Romel Roberts.
Cambridge was not required to plead to the capital offence which was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Cambridge told the court that he is an 18-year-old resident of Number 40 Village, West Coast Berbice.
Information presented by Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers revealed that on the day in question, the two men, who are both gold miners, were “washing down” the dredge and recovered 4.5 pennyweights of gold. They subsequently divided the raw gold between themselves and went to a shop on the landing to consume alcohol. Later, while they were still drinking, Roberts accused Cambridge of stealing the gold. A scuffle subsequently ensued and Cambridge took a knife from his waist and stabbed Roberts in his abdomen. Cambridge escaped and Roberts was taken to the McKenzie hospital in Linden where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Jeffers stated that the file in relation to the matter has been completed and the prosecution will be ready to disclose statements in about a week’s time. The magistrate adjourned the matter to December 11th for the disclosure of statements and remanded Cambridge to prison.
