A Corentyne man, who was on Tuesday charged in connection with the recent accident along the Bushlot Village, West Coast Berbice Public Road which resulted in the death of a 7-year old schoolboy, was yesterday placed on $500,000 bail.
Ramesh Sewlall, 21, of Lot 53 Bushlot Farm, Corentyne, appeared at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh where he was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
It is alleged that Sewlall on November 27 drove motor car, PPP 7721, in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Nirfan Nezamdeen, 7.
Sewlall, who was not required to plead to the charge, was placed on $500,000 bail.
His driver’s licence has been suspended and he was ordered to lodge his passport pending the outcome of the matter. Following the accident, Nezamdeen’s mother, Ameena Diaram, 25, her daughter Aasiyah Nezamdeen, 8, and their neighbour, Parbattie Koblall also known as ‘Cindy’, 49, were all transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Koblall’s daughter, Taheilla Koblall, 8, and another neighbour, Aiyana Arokium, 8, both of whom attend the Lachmansingh Primary School, were kept at the Fort Wellington Public Hospital for several days for observation.
Stabroek News was told that the two female adults were returning home after collecting their children, along with Aiyana, from school when the car, PPP 7721, which was heading to New Amsterdam, slammed into them. The car then toppled into a nearby trench where it pinned Nirfan.
Public-spirited persons rushed to the scene to offer assistance and extracted the lad by removing the front bumper of the car, since he was reportedly trapped under it.
