Thirty-five-year-old Jairam Lallman was ordered to serve a four-year sentence yesterday after he admitted to having over 100 pounds of cannabis in his possession.

Lallman, of Lot 757 Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice, was also ordered to pay a fine of $27,635,400, which is three times the street value of the narcotic.

The charge against Lallman, which was read by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court One, stated that on December 2nd, at Mandela Avenue, Georgetown, he had in his possession 46.59 kilogrammes, equivalent to 102.713 pounds, of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.

According to the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) Prosecutor Narissa Leander, around 20:25 hours CANU officers, acting on information received, intercepted a car, PFF 3516, on Mandela Avenue. A search was subsequently conducted and in the trunk of the vehicle, CANU officers found several parcels of suspected cannabis. A test was done on the leaves and the results revealed that it was cannabis. He was arrested and taken to CANU headquarters, where the narcotic was weighed in his presence.

Lallman was further interrogated and he told CANU officers he uplifted the narcotic from a location in Berbice after he received a call from his cousin, who is known as ‘Truck.’ According to Leander, Lallman borrowed his brother’s car after receiving the call and uplifted the narcotic from two men, who placed the parcels in the trunk of the vehicle after which he went to meet ‘Truck’ in Georgetown. ‘Truck,’ who was driving a white car, then told Lallman to follow him and it was at that time CANU intercepted. She said Lallman also revealed that he was taking the “leaves” to someone.

Before being sentenced, Lallman said, “Your worship I am really sorry about that. This is the first time I do something like this.”

Three other persons are in custody assisting with investigations.
