A 26-year-old Mabaruma farmer, who allegedly lashed a boat captain with a piece of wood, resulting in his death, was remanded to prison yesterday after he was charged with murder.

Marcus Joaquin, 26, was not required to plead to the indictable charge after it was read to him by Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Five.

The charge stated that on November 30th, 2019, at Kumaka Waterfront, North West District, Joaquin murdered Cleveland James.

Joaquin was remanded to prison until February 18th, 2020, when a hearing is slated for the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court on.

Police say on the day in question James was sitting at the boat landing with his wife and three-year-old son and they were approached by Joaquin, who was using indecent language and later threw a beer bottle at the family after which an argument ensued between the two men. During the argument, James attempted to usher his family to safety but was pushed twice by Joaquin who subsequently armed himself with a piece of wood and lashed James in his neck. He then escaped and James was later pronounced dead on arrival at the Mabaruma Hospital.
