Police shot at by suspected smugglers at Belfield

A party of police came under fire yesterday morning as they intercepted a suspected contraband activity at Belfield Foreshore, East Coast Demerara.

Police Commander of Region 4 subdivision C, Andries Junor, told Stabroek News that police acted on information and ventured to the area where the activity was taking place.

As they approached, a boat, which police suspected to have transported the contraband was leaving and the persons inside the boat opened fire.

After the perpetrators made good their escape, police proceeded closer to the area and found a vehicle with 83 packets of chicken. Each packet of chicken weighed 10 pounds.

The vehicle and the packets of chicken, Junor said, were taken into custody and an investigation has been launched.

None of the police ranks were injured.

Two weeks ago, a rank from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) was shot after he and colleagues came under fire during an anti-smuggling operation at Mahaica Creek.

A quantity of suspected alcoholic beverages and chicken were being smuggled at the time of the interception.
