A 26-year-old taxi driver was ordered to serve three years in prison on Thursday after he was found guilty of stealing more than $85,000 in articles from a West Ruimveldt resident during a burglary.
Yudhister Samjawan was on trial before Magistrate Dylon Bess in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court Six.
The charge against Samjawan stated that on October 4th, 2019, at West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Yanti Stephens and stole a phone valued $35,000, $50,000, and a pair of women’s underwear valued $400.
During his arraignment, Samjawan told the court that he did not commit the crime and that the police placed the underwear in his pocket while he was being arrested.
However, at the trial’s conclusion on Thursday, the magistrate found him guilty of the offence and sentenced him to three years in jail.
Police have said Stephens was awakened by a loud noise on the night in question and when she went to see what had caused the noise, she saw Samjawan crawling in her house. She raised an alarm and Samjawan jumped into a nearby trench. After the police arrived, they took Samjawan out of the trench and searched him and found the underwear in his pocket. He was subsequently arrested.
