Following the conclusion of the 2019 cycling season the outstanding cyclists are set to be rewarded tonight at the Guyana Cycling News Awards with Briton John adjudged the cyclist-of-the-year.
When the function gets underway at the St. Stanislaus College Auditorium, the We Stand United rider will be rewarded as the most improved rider after he finished at the top of the rankings in the Open category.
The 19-year-old John, who competed in the senior division this season continued from where he left off last year when he won the junior cyclist of the year award.
He dethroned Team Cocos’ Jamaul John who ended 2017 and 2018 as the best in the category.
Despite securing the most wins this year with 10 victories, Jamaul John placed third behind Linden Bauxite Flyers’ Michael Anthony who copped second place. Curtis Dey (PSL Trojan), Paul DeNobrega (Evolution) and Andre ‘Padlock’ Green (WS United) finished in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Ajay Gopilall, who finished second in the junior division last season has moved up and proven himself as the junior cyclist-of-the-year while Ralph Seenarine finished as the runner-up and Sherwin Sampson rounding off the podium.
In the veterans Under-50 category, Team Cocos’ Junior Niles was unchallenged for the title which he has now won since 2012 with the exception of 2013 and 2014 when the awards were not held.
Alanis’ Paul Choo-Wee-Nam trailed Niles for second while Alex Mendes settled for third in the category.
Meanwhile, in the Over-50 group, Ian Jackson retained his position from last season with Kennard Lovell and Andy Spencer, second and third respectively.
Two-time national female champion, Denise Jeffrey has secured the female cyclist-of-the year award.
All winners will receive an award along with cash prizes.
