Putting a greater focus on sports in schools and the question of the use of the funds of the Guyana Lottery Company were among the talking points when the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) hosted its annual Christmas Social on Friday night.
At the social which was held at the residence of President of the GOA, K Juman Yassin, the GOA boss declared:“There is no real sports in schools.” He added that in the new year and beyond….“we should try and see how best we can try to change the focus of sports in schools.”
Juman-Yassin, who spoke in the presence of several heads and members of local federations and Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton after a buffet dinner then added: “Let us develop in the schools. We need to come together to work as one to see how best we can to offer coaching in a variety of sports.”
The GOA head said that the nation’s athletes needed more exposure.
“We need to get our athletes exposed to more competitions here and abroad and I hope next year there would be more funding for sports.
“We expect a bit more from the government and much more will come to sports,” he promised.
Juman Yassin also questioned what was being done with the Lotto funds.
“Where is all the money from the lotto funds which was promised for sports is going?”
As customary, he then called for the installation of the long awaited ‘Sports Policy’ and wished everyone in attendance a “Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.”
Norton echoed similar sentiments and reiterated government’s commitment to the development of sports in Guyana. He also disclosed that Guyana will host the 2021 Junior Carifta Games.
