Rose Hall Town Poonai on Saturday stormed off with the Berbice Cricket Board/Trophy Stall Under-13 title after gaining first innings points against Albion at the Hampshire Community Centre Ground.
Playing the two innings format under glorious sunshine and witnessed by spectators that overflowed the stands and verandahs around the ground, Albion took first strike but were bowled out for 55 with only Devin Lalbehari (12) reaching double figures.
Extras contributed 17.
Deraj Ramjit picked up 4-3 while Kemraj Tika chipped in with 2-8.
Rose Hall Town were in danger of losing first innings points but eventually climbed to 67 all out. Tyrese Sealy top scored with 12 while Albion gifted 18 extras.
In Albion’s second innings, and with a deficit of 12, they raced to 47-4 with player of the match Lalbehari (23) and Chandan Parbhodyal (17) at the crease before declaring in the hope of an outright win. Tika returned to take 3-6.
With 36 runs needed for victory and light fading quickly, Rose Hall Town reached 10 without loss when the match was called off to walk away with the $50,000 first prize.
Speaking to the group of youngsters, President of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster, reminded the teens, and a few female players, that they are the future and that he hoped to see them continuing their development as they elevate into the U15, U17 and U19 levels.
Foster said that if he is re-elected when the body holds its election of office bears for 2020 later this month, there will be an added focus on youth tournaments.
He also said that he will give priority as it relates to assistance to clubs with solid youth structures.
Trophy Stall’s representative Daniel Samaroo encouraged the players to remain focused on their goals and stick to being disciplined.
He added that the company was proud to be associated with the development of sports and to invest in helping to curb the epidemic of delinquents in the country while meaningfully engaging the children.
