The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) yesterday voted to renew the contract of Chief Election Officer Keith Lowenfield, whose term was due to expire at the end of March, 2020.
The decision was made during yesterday’s statutory commission meeting.
Opposition-nominated Commissioner, Sase Gunraj, told Stabroek News last evening that GECOM Chairperson Justice (ret’d) Claudette Singh, S.C., and the government-nominated commissioners voted to renew Lowenfield’s contract, while he and other opposition-nominated commissioners abstained, as they believed the decision should have been made after the upcoming March 2nd general and regional elections
The renewal of the contract comes against the backdrop of concerns that Lowenfield’s health may be an impediment against his effective execution of his mandate.
It also comes amidst allegations by Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo that Lowenfield has acted to thwart information technology aid offered to GECOM by the United Nations.
Gunraj also said that the commission would continue meeting today, when they will discuss other GECOM affairs.
