A young Marriott Hotel worker succumbed at a city hospital early yesterday morning, almost 12 hours after he allegedly collided with a car while riding his motorcycle along the Nonpareil, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Public Road.
Joel Sobers, 20, of Lot 326 Morning Glory Avenue, Melanie, ECD, suffered serious injuries about his body, including to his head, in the accident, which occurred around 4.20 pm on Monday.
He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he succumbed around 4.10 am yesterday. He never regained consciousness prior to his death.
At the time of the accident, Sobers was riding motor cycle CK 1683. He was reportedly not wearing a helmet and was allegedly speeding.
A police source told Stabroek News that the preliminary investigation has revealed that a hire car, HC 5447, was proceeding east along the northern side of the public road.
The driver alleged that he turned south across the road to go to a shop when Sobers, who was proceeding west along the southern side, allegedly at a fast rate of speed, collided with his car.
As a result of the collision, Sobers lost control of his motorcycle and collided with another car, PPP 1210, which was proceeding behind the hire car.
Both drivers were taken into custody by police as they investigate the accident.
In a Facebook post after the accident, the dead man’s mother, Youlanda Dover, said that after she received the dreaded news that her eldest son was involved in an accident, she prayed that he would pull through despite his condition.
Dover also questioned when drivers will learn to be cautious on the roadways and even hinted at forgiving the person responsible for her son’s death. “….Drivers when will y’all learn to be cautious….y’all killed my son but I still have strength and faith to find it in my heart to forgive y’all….yes forgive y’all,” she wrote.
