Former Caribbean Under – 21 table tennis champion Shemar Britton closed out 2019 on a positive note following his recent championship run in the 2019 Trinidad and Tobago Reliability Maintenance Service Limited (RMSL) Super Singles Men’s table tennis championship in the twin island republic.
Britton, who entered the tournament as the defending champion, secured the crown by accounting for Arun Roopnarine 3-2 in the final stage of the round robin finals where his only defeat was to Aaron Wilson.
The 21-year-old who is currently pursuing studies at the University of the West Indies told Stabroek Sports that he is pleased with his performance.
“I’m very satisfied to have defended my title in such a competitive tournament. That was my fourth tournament win in Trinidad,” Britton disclosed.
With his focus now static on an anticipated stern agenda in 2020, he explained that his ultimate goal would be to take his form into the new year as he gears up to compete for a golden opportunity to display his talent at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
“I will be attending the Olympic qualifiers in April. The host country for the Olympic qualifiers is still to be determined after the tournament was moved from Cuba due to organizational difficulties,” he remarked. He added that he continues to fine tune his craft at the Queen’s Park Oval Table Tennis Facility under the guidance of Coach Aaron Edwards.
The southpaw player, in summing up 2019, described the period as a “solid” one having achieved a number of his desired outcomes.
“2019 was a solid year in all for me; getting my first senior Caribbean singles medal was big… it was a goal I had set for myself at the beginning of the year and I’m looking forward to an even bigger 2020.”
Britton at the championships held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall gained a silver medal in the boys U-21 division and a bronze medal in the men’s singles where he reached the semi-finals from a tough field.
