Dear Editor,
Permit me to query once again why our Guyanese accents (on television and radio) must be sacrificed for the American one. No more the Carlton James, Margaret Lawrence, Ron Robinson – the latter two still around – also Gordon Moseley, Stan Gouveia etc.
Living in England for many years, it was a pleasure for me to speak grammatical English with my Guyanese accent, along with the Africans – who held their own – and my favorite Jamaicans who drove the buses for a living but when they wished to abuse (pun intended), it was in Creolese.
Our older folks will tell you how political campaigning in the past was most effective with the late President Burnham, Cheddi and Barney Johnson, etc, having caught their audience’s attention on the local platform at Bourda Green.
Look at the foreign TV, US, BBC, Africa, India broadcasters. Guyanese Creolese is being encouraged locally as a second language at the UG.
