Armed bandits last evening staged a robbery at the Chenick and Sons Supermarket, in Betsy Ground Village, East Canje, Berbice, where they severely beat the owner and discharged several shots during the attack, including one that resulted in a customer being grazed.
Sources told Sunday Stabroek that six men carried out the attack, which occurred around 8 pm.
The bandits subsequently escaped with a vehicle belonging to the owner, Chenick Moses, 44, in the direction of New Forest, East Canje Berbice.
Not long after, police found the vehicle abandoned in an area next to the Canje Creek in New Forest.
Meanwhile, immediately after the robbery, the owners closed the supermarket. However, persons in Canje last evening gathered in front of the business after word broke that there was a robbery.
Sunday Stabroek was told that the bandits, who were armed with a gun and cutlasses, invaded the premises and robbed the owner.
His firearm and a sum of cash were stolen. Moses was also reported to have been beaten with a gun, which resulting in him sustaining head injuries.
During the robbery the bandits also discharged several rounds and one reportedly grazed a person who was in front of the supermarket at the time.
Every afternoon, several persons gather in front of the supermarket, which houses a Superbet location, to play games. Several other customers were present in the supermarket at the time of the attack.
Chenick and Sons Supermarket is one of the largest supermarkets operated in the Canje area. The owners are well known for their friendly attitude.
