The celebrated Gaico Construction Grand Prix series of chess tournaments comes to a conclusion this, and next weekend, at the Providence Stadium following two months of intense encounters. The series, four in total, was anchored to a reform platform to enable and ensure Guyana’s finest chess players represent the nation at the 2020 Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.
A country as inexperienced in the cerebral mind game as Guyana can only lift her standard through the identification of her most prolific players. Guyana, still developing its cadre of players, is aiming to achieve and upgrade titles at the 2020 Olympiad. We cannot compete with a measure of continued success against the world’s best in chess, but we can increase our FIDE rating points, and, simultaneously, garner titles. That is our aim. And that is the reason why the Gaico Construction Grand Prix spanked of such importance.
