The Golden Grove Community Centre Ground will come alive this evening when the knockout round of the inaugural 592 Beer Inter-Village Football Championship commences with a doubleheader.
Golden Grove will match skills with Brusch Dam in the opening match from 20:00hrs. The match promises to be an exciting affair pitting the robust Brusch Dam outfit led by Allister Thomas and Stephen Dolphin against the attacking quality of Dwain Jacobs, Quason McAulay, Seretsi Huntley and Phillip Williams.
Meanwhile, the second match of the evening will witness tournament favourite Beterverwagting (BV) locking horns with dark horse Ann’s Grove at 22:00hrs.
The offensive-minded BV unit possess the talented duo of Omari Glasgow and Jemar Harrigon, who are capable of unlocking any rearguard. However, Kevon Barry and Kevin Williams are the main pillars for a physically imposing Ann’s Grove unit who are more than capable of securing the result.
Meanwhile, the tournament will continue on Christmas Day with another doubleheader. The first match on the card will pit Mahaica against Friendship from 20:00hrs. In the second fixture, hosts Buxton tackles Paradise at 22:00hrs.
Tournament coordinator Eon Havercome stated, “All systems are in place for a wonderful night of action which will set the tempo and atmosphere for the entire knockout round following what was an exciting group stage. The teams competing for the place in the grand finale are best of the lot and I anticipate quality football which will captivate the respective fans. This festive season is traditionally a football period especially on the corridors of East Coast Demerara so we expect the tournament to grow from strength to strength as we near the January 1st finale.”
The winner of the competition will receive $500,000 and the championship trophy. Meanwhile, the second, third and fourth place finisher will receive $200,000, $150,000 and $100,000 respectively and the corresponding trophy.
Similarly, individual prizes will also be awarded for the Most Valuable Player [MVP] of the tournament, the MVP of the finale, the Best Goalkeeper of the tournament and the Best Goalkeeper of the final. Sponsors of the tournament include Bakewell Guyana Incorporated, ExxonMobil, the NSC and the Colin Talbot Construction Services.
