The Medical Council of Guyana will in January be conducting hearings on the deaths of the three children who died earlier this year at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after medication was incorrectly administered to them, according to Chairman Dr Navindranauth Rambaran.
Rambaran told Stabroek News that the matter is still pending before the council’s disciplinary committee and hearings are set to commence next month. He noted that the committee has gone through the findings and is now preparing to deliberate on them and hear from the parties involved.
He explained that after the hearings are concluded, the council will decided on the way forward based on the recommendations put forward by the disciplinary committee. The disciplinary committee has been pursuing the findings from the investigations for several months.
The three children – Curwayne Edwards, seven, Roshini Seegobin three, Sharezer Mendonca, six – were all leukemia patients and were treated by the same team of doctors. They fell ill after being administered cancer drugs and later succumbed.
Edwards died on January 14th, while Seegobin, of Enmore, East Coast Demerara, died on January 18th, and Mendonca, of Queenstown, Esse-quibo Coast, died on January 24.
The GPH and the Ministry of Public Health launched separate investigations, which found that the medication was incorrectly administered and standard operating procedures were not followed.
The three doctors who were directly involved were relieved of their duties and subsequently sent on administrative leave on January 29th. They remain on leave.
