PPP/C Member of Parliament Harry Gill is calling on Agriculture Minister Noel Holder to investigate an alleged “massive land-grab” by persons connected to the Mahaica/Mahaicony/Abary – Agricultural Development Authority (MMA/ADA).
In a missive to this newspaper, Gill said that the area of interest is near Abary, and involve lands once occupied by the now defunct Livestock Development Company – LIDCO. According to Gill, his sources allege that an application for over 300 acres of land was applied for in the name of a friend of a person connected to the MMA.
He also alleged that the person in question is already “illegally” occupying “hundreds of acres of state land” in the area.
He noted that this is against the backdrop of farmers of Region Five being told that their applications for state land to cultivate rice cannot be processed because no land is available.
“I now call upon the Minister of Agriculture, Noel Holder, to investigate this allegation of massive land grab…”, Gill said.
